Philosophy (AS/A2, Degree)

EXPERIENCE

I have 6 years of experience as a private tutor, dividing my time between Barcelona and London.  My experience is concentrated on teaching Spanish and English as a second language.

Additionally, I taught English at a secondary school in Barcelona full-time from September 2013 - 2014. I have several years of experience as a professional translator, translating from English to Spanish in various subject matters. I am currently a professional reader for a publishing company based in Barcelona.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Universitat de Barcelona - MA in Contemporary Thought - first class.

  • Universitat Pompeu Fabra - MA in Publishing - first class.

  • University of London, Birkbeck College - MA in Philosophy - first class

  • London School of Economics - MSc Philosophy of Social Science - high 2:1

  • Universitat de Barcelona - BA with a major on Sociology - first class (Academic Excellence Award)

Scholarships:

Throughout my academic career I have gained a variety of scholarships, including the Beca De Posgrado Caja Madrid, which is the most prestigious postgraduate scholarship awarded in Spain. Additionally, I was awarded a substantial scholarship from London School of Economics for my MSc, and was awarded the Beca De Posgrado Sa Nostra for my MA at Birkbeck.

APPROACH TO TUITION

I have a well structured approach which aims to uncover the student's weaknesses within the first few sessions. For example, underlying confusion about verb tenses often needs to be resolved before we can address more advanced issues. After the initial assessment, I devise a comprehensive improvement scheme, which includes continual assessment of the student's progression.

Additionally I am friendly and patient, and am careful to tailor lessons to my student's interests to keep them motivated and engaged.

TESTIMONIALS

“I wanted to let you know that my daughter has just received her result for her Spanish GCSE.... She got an A!!!! She is delighted, as are we. She could not have achieved this without all your help and encouragement so a HUGE thank you to you.” (August 2019)

In addition, I have extensive experience preparing Year 6 students for the Independent Schools Examinations Board Pre-Test.

Public Examinations

§  GCSE/IGCSE – I have tutored numerous students for English Language, English Literature and History. My experience has covered both the Edexcel and CIE exam boards. One student, who was originally struggling with IGCSE History, was given a Senior School Award for his ‘excellent analysis’ in History and he subsequently followed this with an A* on results day. Furthermore, in his GCSE English Language resit, he went from Grade 5 to Grade 9. Several of my students have obtained A*s in IGCSE/ GCSE History. Others have also obtained excellent grades in both English Language and Literature.

§  A-Level – Tutored students in English Literature, History and Politics for various exam boards. Recently, a student of mine obtained an A in OCR A-Level History, which his school was not expecting.

General Tuition

§  Key Stage 2 – I have tutored numerous students at this level with varying tuition goals. One, for instance, was working in preparation for their admission to a preparatory school, whilst another student was tutored predominantly in Mathematics but predominantly in English in order to raise their confidence in preparation for Year 5 by making English enjoyable and inspirational. At this level, I have also gained experience in developing strategies for teaching pupils with learning difficulties such Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia.

§  Key Stage 3 – Worked as a tutor on a pro-bono basis for a comprehensive school on their scholars’ programme by proving extra English tuition to their ablest students. I have also helped students to demonstrate notable improve in their English compositions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University of Oxford, Kellogg College, due Sept 2020, MSt Literature and Arts

  • University of Cambridge, Wolfson College, 2015, MPhil Modern European History

  • University of London, Birkbeck, 2014, BA History (First Class Honours)

APPROACH TO TUITION

My attitude to private tuition is based on the notion that its purpose is to uncover what may never be found during private study. I often ask my students if they think that they are significantly more knowledgeable and comfortable with their subjects now than they were a mere six months. Under the guidance of an able tutor, progress can be secured far more efficiently than what is possible in the classroom environment.

Furthermore, having previously worked as an academic and motivational trainer for GCSE students, I bring a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm to the table.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University of Amsterdam: BA Media and Culture
  • University of Amsterdam: MRes Media Studies (with honours)

APPROACH TO TUITION

I am an enthusiastic tutor with a great skill for helping students to prepare for exams and deadlines in a fun and efficient way. I design results-based lessons that focus on boosting confidence and balancing academic progress with learning enjoyment. Central to my lessons are assignments that demand active engagement with a subject and help students grow into confident learners. The aim of a lesson is hence always twofold: by studying a certain subject in preparation of an exam, the student also acquires study skills that will prove useful in further education.

TESTIMONIALS

"Aletta has been a great support to our son in his preparation for the City of London admissions test (11+). After weekly tutor sessions, he scored excellently in his test."

"Aletta is currently tutoring 2 young primary students through our tutoring agency. One is a young boy who has ADHD, and one who is a young girl. Both parents have been delighted with Aletta's work so far. She is covering Maths, English, verbal and non verbal reasoning with them.

In our experience, Aletta has been a pleasure to work with - very professional, accommodating and patient."

Once I understand exactly what a tutee hopes to achieve, (e.g. A* Maths GCSE, or simply understanding algebra) I have three main priorities as a tutor:

i) to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses through short tests

ii) to provide a course of study and assessment that will focus on the weaknesses and monitor progress

iii) to give the student belief in themselves and their abilities and to instil a love of learning

Anna

Anna

Anna is a special needs education specialist who impressed us at interview with her engaging and sympathetic teaching style. She is passionate about literature and keen to help all students develop a love for English.

SUBJECTS TAUGHT

English (11+, 13+, 16+, GCSE, AS/A2, undergraduate level)

English as a Second Language (beginner, intermediate, advanced)

Study support (ages 7 - 18, especially for children with SEN)

EXPERIENCE

I currently work full-time in a learning difficulties department at a college. Our students have a variety of special needs, including autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia, Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy. The majority of my time is spent working one-on-one with students, supporting them with English, Maths, life skills and socialisation. Previously, I spent three years teaching English as a Second Language at secondary school level. I was primarily based in a highly competitive English intensive school, Nishi Senior High, in Japan.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Albyn School for Girls (2006) - Highers - Art and Design (A), Classics (A), Modern Studies (A), English (B), Biology (B)

BIOGRAPHY

After finishing my degree, I moved to Japan to jump-start my teaching career and learn about a fascinating new culture. I taught English for three years, and subsequently decided to focus on children with special educational needs and moved back to the UK to accept a full time position at Westminster Kingsway College. I plan to pursue a degree in clinical psychology, specialising in children with autism.

APPROACH TO TUITION

I consider the most important element of tuition to be its interactive and communicative nature. My lessons are always extremely question-based, and I seek to guide the student towards unpicking a text for themselves rather than delivering a lecture.

I strongly believe in every child's right to education and am passionate about teaching individuals with special needs such as dyspraxia, dyslexia or autism. While tutoring I can draw on my wealth of experience with SEN to tailor each lesson to suit individual learning styles and needs.

“Gerry's teaching was excellent.  He stepped in at a critical time for us to help our son prepare for the 11+ entrance exams. He very quickly got to know our son, his strengths, interests and areas for development. He tailored the lessons accordingly, motivated our son and drew parallels for our son between his effort in English and his effort on the football field. Gerry was always well prepared and was flexible, adapting his lessons to our son’s needs and our requests. We would recommend Gerry without hesitation and in fact Gerry will begin teaching our daughter very shortly.”
Parents of 11+ pupil. This student received offers from the schools he applied to including Alleyn’s, UCS and Forest. (January 2018)

I got offers from all of my top schools including one academic scholarship.  His teaching style was fun, hardworking and informative. My lessons were online via Skype which I enjoyed. We shared a google document to build my vocabulary bank, to keep notes on grammar and spellings as well as record homework.  I would scan and email my essays and comprehension tasks. As well as working with Gerry on English he gave me interview tips which were really helpful too. I would just like to thank Gerry for everything he has done for me.”

GCSE, IGCSE, and A-level English

“I have just opened the 3 exam subjects that came out today and I would say that I am surprised and very happy! I received a Grade 7 in French and a Grade 8 in both English Language and Literature! I thought that my French would be better than English, but instead it was the other way round! I am still keeping my fingers crossed for my other 7 subjects that will come out next week. I hope I do well in them!

Finally, thank you very much for helping me achieve these grades. Your tutoring sessions finally paid off! I wish all the best for you and your family!”

We are all over the moon about it and wanted to share our happiness and gratitude with you as soon as possible. Thank you for your untiring efforts and time as well as diligence without which none of this would have been possible.

His overall results were very good. While I’m ecstatic about all the other grades, the ones that have pleasantly surprised me the most are his English ones as we both know he had quite some distance to cover in order to get a good grade. All kudos to you and your guidance .

Our sincerest and most heart felt thanks to you and our prayers for you and your family."
—Parent Of IGCSE student (Summer 2018)

"Gerry, I've never had a tutor who has made me feel so comfortable. Under your guidance my confidence has grown and my learning has come on leaps and bounds. Thank you!"
—A-level English student

French, German and English as a Second Language

"As an overseas parent, we have constantly struggled to find a good tutor who could spark my son’s interest in the language. Luckily, another tutor recommended Gerry to us. We appreciated the fact that he took the trouble to establish what our needs were, the child’s learning style and our aims.

We have been very pleased with the work and pace he had achieved with our son. His confidence has been boosted and he has found enjoyment in the learning. Gerry has a wonderful way of putting the child at ease and communicating in an extremely encouraging manner. As parents, we admire his patience and enthusiasm.  We would highly recommend Gerry to any parent for preparing for 11+, 13+, GCSE or beyond.

In my son’s words: “ Gerry is kind, organised, fun and fantastic!”
— Parent of 11+ pupil now in the U.K. at their first choice school (January 2018)

— A-level German student.

"Gerry's teaching was outstanding. He helped our son to improve his A Level Grade from a C to an A in just 6 months. He was always well prepared and tailored the lessons exactly to our son's needs. We would recommend Gerry without hesitation."
— Parents of A-level German student

"Gerry was extremely friendly and made every effort to explain patiently and to help us to learn everything we could. I felt very comfortable in his lessons and was able to ask him anything I needed to improve my English". -- Manu and Cristina, healthcare professionals.

“Gerry gave me an intensive English course for 2 weeks. He is a very patient tutor who explained everything clearly so I’ve progressed much better than I expected. He really helped me to improve my English and I really enjoyed working with him!”
— Merouane, French engineering student.

"I studied French at A level with Gerry as my tutor, and I definitely couldn't have achieved my B without him. His teaching style is immersive - he has so much experience with languages, it's like you're talking and learning with a native speaker! In my time at sixth form he went above and beyond to ensure that me and my classmates got the most out of his lessons and achieved our best in examinations. A friendly and thorough tutor, and one of the most travelled and generous people I have ever met. Gerry is the perfect tutor if you want to understand a language."

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University of Sussex: BSc Biology, 2:1
  • Open University: s104 - Exploring Science, 1st

APPROACH TO TUITION

My approach is to first identify the specific areas that need work. I'll compose a lesson plan to be built around each area. For each lesson I use cartoons, humour and stories to encode information in a digestible form so that its principles can be better understood. I can then amplify this understanding with belt-and-braces memorisation by using a flashcard computer programme which I have come to find very useful. This is particularly effective for essay questions and exam preparation.

Individual sessions carry with them the luxury of tailoring a style that best fits the student. I am also skilled at keeping the interest of a group and can lead small classes.

Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark small amounts of homework free of charge.

French: 13+ exams, GCSE/ iGCSE, Modern Languages Admissions Test (MLAT)

Greek: 13+ exams

English: Key Stage 2 (ages 7 - 11) , Key Stage 3 (ages 11 - 14), 11+ exams, 13+ exams, GCSE / iGCSE,

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning: 11+ exams, 13+ exams

EXPERIENCE

I have been tutoring in London for the past 6 years, and online more recently. My specialist subjects are French, Latin and English, General Common Entrance preparation in the Humanities and 11+ preparation in English.

I have been teaching both Latin and French from beginner level for the past 3 years and have developed my own course and worksheets to complement any set textbooks a school may prescribe.

I have experience tutoring students for national exams and entrance exams to a wide variety of schools and universities, including the leading London schools (Westminster Upper, Under & Cathedral Choir Schools, St Paul's School and Cathedral School, Sussex House, NLCS, UCS, City, Channing, Francis Holland, Queen's Gate, Queen's College) and independent boarding schools across the country (Eton, Winchester, Bryanston, Tonbridge, Harrow, Ampleforth, Downside, Bradfield College) as well as Bristol, Leeds, Exeter and Goldsmiths University.

Over the past few years, I've had a number of successful results.

All the students I worked towards the 11+ with over the past few years have been invited for interview, with most ultimately being offered places (UCS, City, Francis Holland, Queensgate, Channing).

A level English and French results: In recent years, French students have upped their grades from their predictions after our combined language and literature sessions. One student last year completed her French A level as an independent candidate, taking her French exam after working on her own, with guidance from me, outside of school, receiving an A. I was lucky enough one year to work and click with a girl who was retaking a paper for her French Edexcel A Level. Through regular tutorials, I fostered an environment where she was able to find her critical voice and to really get beneath the skin of what it is to analyse literature. She learnt a lot, achieved her A, and I had one of the most satisfying tutoring experiences I have had of late. An A Level English student (also retaking her AS) really cracked the exam technique, as well as rediscovering a passion for her texts via her coursework preparatory reading. Further back, a student upped her predicted grade by from C to a B and gained entry to Leeds University, where she's now studying. An IB Higher Level student gained a 6 and entry to her chosen university. I also worked with an AS Level student who needed extra help with the oral topic, and who received the A she desired. I also have knowledge of IGCSE CIE and Edexcel), OCR and AQA exam boards, and have worked with consistent success with English, French and Latin GCSE students.

Last year's Common Entrance results included one Distinction and a great spread of A and Bs for students who really worked hard for them. In recent years, a candidate for Westminster (for whom French and Latin were NOT his favourite subjects!) achieved the required 80% pass mark in each, and was also awarded the Classics Progress Prize at the end of the year; last year I tutored a student through CE for Harrow, upping his French result from a predicted 40% to 90%. I'm currently working towards CE exams this summer with 5 other students.

I'm particularly proud of the catch-up work I did with one 11+ student, who had gained a place at The Hall School in Hampstead and needed to catch up on a year's worth of French classwork from scratch in order not to be behind his classmates when he started. It was a summer of hard work, but it was so lovely watching someone grow in their linguistic capabilities until he really had got to the level he needed to start at. We are now working towards GCSEs together and he is becoming an impressive, if frighteningly tall, student!

I currently have students waiting to sit or currently sitting exams at the following levels: 11+ entrance to North London girls schools, 13+ CE and (I)GCSE, as well as students for whom the work we do is building the foundations for future success.

APPROACH TO TUITION

I take teaching very seriously, and always try to form a solid, professional and hopefully friendly relationship with both students and parents. The student's experience is my number one priority, and I very much believe in finding exactly the right way to help an individual understand or to encourage him/her to think about a topic. I tailor my sessions for the individual student, not the topic and stay in regular contact with parents to ensure we all know what our objectives are and how progress is being made.

TESTIMONIALS

"My daughter's first lesson went very well and she seemed to have enjoyed it very much. Lou is lovely and very engaging." IGCSE French student in Singapore

"Not only did she come to us on (very!) short notice, but she was extremely helpful and prepared my son very fully so that he was able to go into his oral exam with confidence despite having missed an entire week of school. At the end of the exam, he was given very positive feedback on his performance by his teacher/examiner." Mother of previous GCSE student.

"I just wanted to take a few moments to express to you how absolutely delighted we were with our French tutor, Lou Broadbent. We were so pleased with our son's progress under her tutelage. She is lovely and warm to speak to, and utterly focused and clear in her teaching. We could hear, week by week, our son's growing confidence in his ability to speak French, and, by the end, he was doing very well indeed in his mock Common Entrance French Exams. Lou prepared him brilliantly! Thank you so very much for sending Lou our way. I shall be delighted to recommend Lou to everyone." Mother of 13+ French pupil

‘Lou is a fantastic tutor so thank you for sending her our way.’ - CE English

‘It was great I really liked it and already had my second lesson and feel much more confident already.’ - GCSE student

‘B— is delighted with Lou and says she has inspired her to speak French for the joy and not just the exam.

Very much a success!’ - GCSE student

'I just wanted to write a quick note saying how much the girls enjoyed their last session with you. A--- enjoyed the reinforcement of what she had learned in class, and for L--- it helped clarify what had been covered in class. She had previously found it very confusing.

11+ and 1st year GCSE French students

'I spoke with Mrs K-- yesterday and she told me A-- and parents themselves are very happy with Lou. She seems very friendly, considerate, highly professional and dedicated.'

1st year Common Entrance student

“My first lesson with Lou was extremely good - it was evident that she knows both the book and the film inside out and provided lots of great insights for us to talk about and explore further. Lou is exactly who I was looking for! I am looking forward to having more lessons with her.” - A Level French student

'Just wanted to say that N-- and M-- have both had their half term reports from their new schools (Sevenoaks and Eastbourne College respectively). They are both doing quite well, but what I wanted to say in particular is that French (for both of them) and Latin (for N--) were among the highlights; each received perfect or near perfect marks for the subjects they studied with Lou. N--'s report remarked that she is doing ''particularly well'' in Latin. We couldn't have asked for better results considering N-- hadn't ever studied Latin before and M-- had not done French for a year prior to taking it up again at a new school. It is remarkable how much Lou was able to achieve with such a short series of lessons.'

pre-GCSE French & Latin students.

'I wanted to say a huge thank you for all the support and guidance you have given E--. She speaks about you in glowing terms and you have really inspired her to work and have given her a great deal of confidence. I'm sure she'll do well but frankly, whatever the outcome of the exam you have really been a positive influence in her life - thank you so much.'

A Level French resit student

'Lou tutored our son O-- in French and Latin in the weeks coming up to CE. He loved his sessions with her and really engaged in the work and learnt a lot through her help allowing him to get more confident in his ability to pass the exams. Now in his first term at his senior school he has continued to do well in French and Latin and I'm sure that's a follow on from the work he did with Lou. I'd highly recommend her to you.'

APPROACH TO TUITION

In the first sessions with any tutee I establish their strengths and weaknesses, and lay out a clear roadmap for the coming weeks. That way, the student and I can track their progress and work towards achievable goals. Dialogue is an essential part of my tutoring style – I strive to help my tutees practise independent thought and reach their own conclusions, rather than lecturing them. I try to make my lessons as engaging as possible, tailoring them to the individual’s needs, and having a little fun along the way – learning Latin vocabulary need not be a drag!

“G did surprisingly well in English. Well done for getting her to such a good level. We will definitely need you again for both girls at some point!”

(13+ English Common Entrance exam student)

Claudia worked for us as a tutor/mentor over the summer. She was absolutely reliable, totally charming, got fully stuck in with the work with the children and was sorely missed when she left. My children are 10 and 8 years old and she did homeschooling with the 8 year old. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.

APPROACH TO TUITION

Since I left school ten years ago I have tutored regularly on evenings and weekends. I love the process of getting to know a child, bringing them out of their shell, and gradually learning where their strengths and challenges lie. I am constantly surprised by the unique combination that exists in each student I work with, and how often they only see their struggles and don’t appreciate their own gifts. It is always a treat to get a glimpse inside the mind of someone whose thought process has not yet been dimmed by adult life.

I have just finished writing a book of historical nonfiction, much to my own surprise. I hated history at school - my teacher would deliver an hour-long monologue, from which we were expected to take notes. I prefer using the Socratic method with my students - gently guiding them to reach their own conclusions, which gives them confidence in the power of their logic and reasoning. I hope it makes learning exciting, dynamic, and something to look forward to rather than dread!

TESTIMONIALS

Rachel tutored my daughter Ella in Mathematics for her 11 plus exams. Under Rachel’s tutelage Ella gained a half scholarship in to her school of choice (Queen’s College). Rachel was always able to keep Ella engaged in her studies and help her focus on her exam technique as well as the technical difficulties and understanding of questions. There was always a fun atmosphere around their sessions and Ella really enjoyed Rachel’s tutoring. I would highly recommend Rachel to any student looking to excel in their exams. [11+ English]

Rachel tutored my daughter for five months and she proved to be reliable, well organised, trustworthy and very effective. My daughter loved her lessons with Rachel and progressed immensely in English comprehension and essay writing. Rachel made learning fun and I recommend her wholeheartedly. [13+ English]
